In this poem, I use an extended metaphor comparing “you” to matches and “me” to a candle. There are so many symbiotic relationships in nature that actively destroy each other which I found really fitting as an analogy to how many people approach relationships. Many people care little for the “self” in a relationship. Above all, they are seeking a way to become something other than themselves. Unfortunately, the truth is they are trying to escape from themselves and their problems. But what I find more interesting is that the narrative commonly crafted around their relationships is they want freedom or passion or adventure. As if the only way to achieve those feelings is through losing yourself.
My favorite part of this metaphor is that this is what both of these people want. The candle may meltaway but it is not a victim of the flame and this is the same for the match. They went into this situation willing and knowing of the destruction that would be the aftermath. I think fire is an especially apt metaphor in this poem because when people just want to feel something, they often relate to and are fascinated by fire. Fire isn’t a state of matter, it is a reaction. Because that is what these people are after, a reaction.
